BRITAIN & IRELAND EXTENSION FOR TICKET TO RIDE

The standard rules for Ticket To Ride Europe apply, and the same train pieces and colour cards are used, so it is necessary to have a boxed set of the game as a basis for playing this extension.

The playing map (shown above) can be downloaded as a jpeg file (1.3 MB) here T2R BI Map_A0_2011-10-27.jpg, a high resolution jpeg (11.1 MB) T2R BI Map_A0_2011-10-27_hires.jpg or as a pdf (23.4 MB) here T2R BI Map_A0_2011-10-27.pdf. It is designed to be printed on A0 paper or plastic (so that the train pieces fit their spaces), but there is surplus space that can be trimmed off to give a final playing size of about 31 in x 36 in. I found that an elegant solution was to print onto plastic film, which can be rolled up for storage, and which rolls out flat for play. I bought mine from Zip-Posters in the UK.

As an alternative, you can download a pdf file (5.1 MB) designed to print the map as 15 separate A4 pages (with a 0.5in overlap) - T2R BI Map_A0_2011-10-27_15xA4_02.pdf (If you are using US Letter paper, it should be possible to print at near-enough the correct size by choosing ‘Fit to printable area’ in the Page Scaling section of the Adobe Reader Print dialogue).

The routes, and additional rules detailing the use of Junctions (red circles on map) and Branch Lines (plain grey lines on map) are available as a pdf (61 KB) T2R Britain and Ireland Routes and Rules_02.pdf.

I have designed Route Cards, available as pdfs:-

Long Routes, Front (7.6 MB):  T2R BI Cards Long_02.pdf

Short Routes, Front (22.9 MB): T2R BI Cards Short_02.pdf

Long Routes, Back (1.9 MB): T2R BI CardBacks_Long_02.pdf

Short Routes, Back (1.8 MB): T2R BI CardBacks_Short_02.pdf

They are designed to fit the US Letter-sized perforated card supplied by Plaincards in the US (see website). I used my own design for the card backs, but Plaincards also supply cards with pre-printed backs, which may be more suitable.

I am grateful to Days of Wonder for giving me permission to publicise this material. Provided you do not try to use it for commercial purposes, I hope you will download and try it for yourself, and I wish you many happy hours of play. SUMMARY

TICKET TO RIDE EUROPE is an excellent board game based upon making train journeys in Europe around the beginning of the 20th Century. Created by Alan R Moon, and published by Days of Wonder, it is one of a portfolio of games based upon the same principles, and a number of extensions have been published for other countries by independent designers. The Britain & Ireland extension published here introduces a system of Branch Lines and Junctions which make it possible to ‘change trains’ mid-route, thereby greatly increasing the scope for route-planning and tactics, and enhancing the already considerable enjoyment that the game provides.
